Viewing File Extensions in Windows 2000, XP and Vista

Enable File Extension Viewing in Windows 2000, XP and Vista

When designing your web pages on your computer, you may have noticed that, by default, Windows does not display the file extension. This can make it very difficult for you to locate specific files, such as your HTML and image files. For example, if you're looking for a file, such as index.html, you will only see index and no .html extension.

Here is how you can enable file extension viewing:

Windows 2000 and XP

1. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer.
2. On the Windows toolbar, go to 'Tools' - 'Folder Options.'
3. Click on the View tab.
4. Go to 'Hide extensions for known file types' and click to remove the check.

Windows Vista

1. Open My Computer.
2. On the Windows toolbar, go to 'Organize' - 'Folder and Search Options.
3. Click on the View tab.
4. Go to 'Hide extensions for known file types' and click to remove the check.

By enabling file extension viewing, you will save yourself alot of time and frustration, as you will be able to view the extensions for known file types.
